During the 1600s, English speakers established the first permanent British settlements in North America. Regional accents and dialects from different parts of the British Iles were brought to the New World. Colonial settlement patterns shaped the foundation and roots of American English. Spoken English loanwords from America influenced the development of the language. The epic story of the English language in North America is fascinating.
