Every year, History Happens hosts a summer pizza party to celebrate the hard work that went into National History Day that year4. This year, I sat down with some of our students—fresh from state and national competitions—to hear their stories in their own words.

From the nerves of first-time competitors to the thrill of hearing their name called at Nationals, these unscripted conversations highlight the lessons learned, the friendships made, and the confidence gained through the NHD experience. You’ll hear about projects ranging from Worcester v. Georgia to the Laconia Incident, and how the process shaped students not just as historians, but as thinkers, presenters, and collaborators.

Whether you’re a student, teacher, or parent curious about the impact of NHD, this episode is a reminder that history isn’t just about dates and events—it’s about discovery, growth, and finding your voice.
