Nailfold capillaroscopy—essentially looking at the tiny blood vessels under your fingernails with a specialized microscope—has been around since a German physician named Johann Christophorus Kohlhaus first peered into the body's tiniest vessels.
Researchers are now developing smartphone apps that can do preliminary assessments of microcirculation using your phone's camera with a simple lens attachment.
