Virtual Stream Deck on the Desktop

If you’re already in love with your Elgato Stream Deck, things are about to get a whole lot cooler—without having to spend a dime on more hardware. Elgato has dropped a beta update (version 7.0) that allows you to create multiple Virtual Stream Decks, and it’s a game-changer for anyone who needs more control surfaces but less clutter.

About Stream Deck

The first Stream Deck came out in 2017, and I had my first deck shortly thereafter, followed by the 32 button version. The Virtual Deck is a set of buttons that you can customize to not only see what you’re pressing, but also customize the button for whatever you need.

For years, content creators, streamers, and video producers have relied on physical Stream Decks— at 6, 15, and 32-button units, along with the Stream Deck Plus, adding dials for more functions —to control everything from video scenes to lighting and music cues.

Virtual buttons were first attainable with the mobile version for iOS and Android. If you had Bitfocus Companion, the emulator would give you on-screen buttons.

But now, with Virtual Buttons, Elgato has unlocked a new layer of flexibility.

What is Virtual Buttons?

6 button Virtual Stream Deck Setup on screen

This new feature allows you to create on-screen buttons that can be clicked with your mouse—or better yet, tapped on a touchscreen. That’s right: your touchscreen laptop or tablet just became a full-on production switcher. Whether you’re on Windows or Mac (both supported), this virtual setup lives right on your desktop.

Price?

Yes, it’s completely free—no strings attached. Just be sure to back up your Stream Deck settings before diving into the beta, as the current public release only takes you to version 6.9. The 7.0 beta must be downloaded separately.

Once installed, these virtual controls act just like their physical counterparts. Switch camera angles, launch apps, trigger lower thirds, or roll that meme audio—all without touching a single piece of hardware. It’s a perfect solution for mobile creators or anyone who’s maxed out their existing Stream Deck.

Whether you’re building a personal hotkey system or streamlining a remote workflow, Elgato’s Virtual Stream Deck is a powerful update that puts more control—literally—at your fingertips.

3 Virtual Stream Decks configured on screen.

How Many Virtual Decks Can You Make?

Each virtual deck (available for Mac or Windows) can set up to 80 buttons. But you can make multiple decks.so the button configuration is endless. I even made a Tetris Stream Deck with colors and different shapes – since buttons that are not active do not show up on the screen.

The One Thing to Watch

The only concern is when you create a virtual Stream Deck, you take up resources. If you are a Twitch streamer (for example), you might have your game, OBS, and streaming through the same machine. Adding any resource – no matter how small – could easily stall your game or stream.

The more Virtual Stream Decks you create, the more resources you could loose.
