Revelation has possibly become the most discussed and speculated on, if not the most controversial, of all books in the Bible. This is not that surprising, considering the incrediblyabstract literary images that are contained in this wonderful piece of writing. A four-week teaching series is not going to come close to answer all the questions that could be addressed, but what we can do is focus on the key characters and themes that we can find in this powerful book. Firstly, it is helpful to understand that Revelation is a mix of literary styles. It is a prophetic text following in the tradition of Old Testament prophets, it is an apocalyptic work full of symbolic imagery,and it is a situational letter written to a group of people living within the historical and societal context of the Roman Empire.
