“As a young girl she was uncomfortable in her own skin. A black girl raised in a white neighborhood, she felt alone but had a deep desire to be seen. But she would eventually grow up and find a place where not only fit in but was also seen. That was just the beginning. Oneika Mays would go from feeling like she was finally seen by others to seeing herself for the first time in a whole new way. Come in and listen to Oneika Mays story. She’s type A, energetic, down to earth and another downright amazing F50Woman and she’s doing yoga in prison.”

We Talk About…

  • Identity
  • Feeling fear and avoiding shame
  • Messages she received about “blackness”
  • What risk is not
  • Loss of love to war
  • Fired and failure / Quitting and shame
  • The power of yoga and mindfulness in her life
  • Yoga at Rikers Island

Quotes She Served Up:

  • “We get so caught up in being productive to contribute to society that desiring to pause feels foolish and selfish.”
  • “You can change or be comfortable, but you cannot do both at the same time.”
  • “Yoga is a place to have a tender conversation with myself”

What Changed Everything: Yoga. Yoga introduced Oneika to herself

Advice for Her Younger Self: Don’t be afraid and don’t worry about what everyone thinks. You can not run from grief or pain. Those things will propel you.

One Message for the World: Remember to Love Yourself. It’s okay to love yourself
