Discograffiti is the deep-dive podcast for music obsessives. In this episode, author Lewis Shiner discusses his epic, 868-page, music-based novel Outside The Gates Of Eden, which follows a series of characters from 1965 to the present day. Lewis describes it as a "War & Peace for the Woodstock Generation," and I believe it is an absolute masterpiece, one of the 10 best books I’ve ever read in my life.

Lewis explains the book’s origin, its adept blend of fact and fiction, how Dylan going electric became the leap-off point for both himself and his main characters, how the entirety of Woodstock earned a place in the book as a tour de force tableaux during an important sequence, the real-life stalwarts from the late 1960s rock scene who became characters in this world, and how he knew as an author that it was time to stop writing books.
