Nebuchadnezzar the Great, second king of the Neo-Babylonian Empire, reigned for 43 years. He was the most powerful man in the world, yet through the prophet Daniel God warned the king about his arrogance, pride, and the trust he placed in his empire and majesty. Later, when the king did not change, God banished him into a period of insanity, only to bestow grace and restore the king to power seven years later. The King learned that pride goes before a fall, that neither rulers nor great kingdoms last forever, and only God is truly trustworthy and eternal. There are many lessons in this story for today, for example, the USA is powerful but only about 250 years old, a drop in the bucket compared to the old three thousand year Egyptian kingdom. No one knows the USA's future or our future and no nation or President can guarantee it. Only God is the Sovereign ruler of the universe, eternal, omnipotent, trustworthy, in whom we can place our hope.
