On the morning of January 15, 1947, a young mother and her child strolling through a vacant lot in Los Angeles stumbled upon a gruesome sight that would haunt the city—and the nation—for decades. The bisected body of a young woman, meticulously posed and horrifically mutilated, lay in the grass. She would soon be identified as 22-year-old Elizabeth Short, a hopeful actress later immortalized by the chilling nickname "The Black Dahlia."
