Other Artists Featured: Junior Boys, Rinocerose, Skinny Puppy, Lowfish, Matthew Dear, Tiesto, Tangerine Dream, Conjure One, Imiafan, Emma Shapplin, Guthrie Galileo, Eat Static, Psykosonik, Justus Kohncke, Erlend Oye
Featured Artist of the Week: Bill Brennan & Andy McNeil
Bill Brennan and Andy McNeill‘s forthcoming Dreaming In Gamelanis an engrossing release that folds McNeill’s extensive studio expertise into Brennan’s immersion in Sundanese Gamelan as a longstanding member of Evergreen Club Contemporary Gamelan. Beginning its life as a documentary score for the CBC back in 2001, and later seeing a live presentation as a gamelan chamber work performed by Evergreen at Toronto’s legendary Massey Hall, the material here has evolved in spurts over the past 25 years. Though rooted in West Javanese traditions, Dreaming In Gamelan embraces aspects of ambient music, jazz and experimental approaches. The involvement of versatile Canadian electric violinist Hugh Marsh adds another dimension to the sound, his assortment of bowed and plucked sonorities assuming many different roles. Marsh has been a collaborator to the likes of “fourth world music” innovator Jon Hassell, Joseph Shabason, and Loreena McKennitt, making him a perfect counterpart to Brennan and McNeill, each of whom have vast amounts of experience in multiple musical fields. The eclectic spirit of all three artists is audible in this album’s refined, mirage-like blending of live instrumentation and vivid electronic trickery.
Slated for independent release by the two stalwart musicians themselves on October 24th, the album will be available as a CD, digital download via Bandcamp, and streaming on all of the major platforms.
