Desperate Housewives episode eighteen, “Children Will Listen,” shows the darkest side of Carlos Solis we’ve seen yet in the series.

“Children Will Listen,” Desperate Housewives’ eighteenth episode, brings some of the darkest scenes / themes in the first season. Yes, darker than Mary Alice Young’s suicide. We’re talking about the Solis’s deeply troubled marriage and Carlos’s seemingly insurmountable rage. This episode contains a scene that sits very high on our list of “This would never be made today.” At least not in the same way it’s presented in this episode. And we’re not even talking about his sabotaging of Gabby’s birth control pills.

In other shocking turns of events, Lynette asks Bree to babysit the kids while she runs out for drinks with former coworkers. She didn’t, however, ask Bree to spank one of the boys. Bet you can guess how Lynette reacts to that. However, Bree has other things on her mind. She debates whether or not to visit Andrew at Camp Hennessy, and when she does, she’s confronted with a not-so-buried secret. Finally, in “Children Will Listen,” Susan definitely fails to listen to her mother Sophie (the great Leslie Ann Warren). I mean, how can you take her seriously when she claims to be physically assaulted by her boyfriend Mortie (the uber-threatening Bob Newhart).

If you’ve never seen Desperate Housewives, then now is a great time to start. The series is available to stream on Hulu / Disney+. Catch up with our podcasts here! Next week, we look at episode nineteen, “Live Alone and Like It,” which further clarifies the Mary Alice Young mystery… and Mike Delfino’s involvement in it.
