There’s growing concern this week following the confirmed spread of the invasive Demon shrimp across several locations along the River Shannon and Lough Derg. After the species was first detected below Lough Derg, further surveys have now identified it in Killaloe, Dromineer, Garrykennedy, Terryglass, Rossmore, Mountshannon, Portumna and even as far as Lough Ree. The predator species poses a serious risk to the ecology of local freshwater systems, prompting fresh warnings for communities and water users.
