2024 Redding Crime Statistics - What Does The Data Say About Community Safety?
Manage episode 488240458 series 2837400
Today, we’re diving into the Redding Police Department’s 2024 Crime Statistics Year-End Review — and it’s packed with significant developments. The department responded to over 109,000 calls for service, a 6.6% increase from the previous year. Arrests also hit a new record, with more than 11,000 total, including a 32% rise in misdemeanor arrests.
But before you start panicking that crime in Redding has hit a new high, we’re pleased to report just the opposite. Despite an expanded crime reporting system (NIBRS), violent and property crimes dropped by about 21% each — a strong sign of progress. And the rise in misdemeanor arrests is directly attributed to more policing with a focus on quality of life issues. Which, depending on your perspective, makes Redding a safer city.
To unpack all these details, today’s guest is Kristen Gurley, the person who tracks, analyzes, and organizes these statistics for the Redding Police Department. We’ll ask her all about the switch to the NIBRS system, how the limited jail space affects our crime stats, and how it’s possible that with all the extra arrests on the quality of life issues, our overall statistics have gone down.
All in all, a busy year for Redding Police — but one that shows measurable impact in both public safety and enforcement. So, stay tuned as we learn more about how RPD is working hard to keep Redding as safe as possible.
