The filioque is a Latin phrase that means "and from the Son". It was added to the Nicene Creed in 589 AD during the Council of Toledo. The filioque states that the Holy Spirit comes from both the Father and the Son, not just the Father. The filioque was originally added to counter Arianism, which was the belief that Christ was not divine. The filioque was intended to correct the idea that the Son was not as divine as the Father. The filioque has been a source of conflict between the Eastern and Western churches. The Eastern Orthodox churches reject the filioque because they believe it goes against the Council of Chalcedon in 451, which stated that the Nicene Creed should not be changed. The filioque is considered one of the main reasons for the schism between the Eastern and Western churches in 1054. Why does Orthodox reject filioque? They claim It is precisely because it changes the nature of God. It upsets the balance of the three Persons of the Holy Trinity.
