30th August 1998: The Chaos That Crowned Jordan
Manage episode 503439018 series 3670475
On August 30, Formula One history was made in the Ardennes. In 1998, Spa-Francorchamps delivered one of the sport’s most dramatic races – a rain-soaked demolition derby at the start, Michael Schumacher’s fury after colliding with David Coulthard, and a fairytale maiden victory for Eddie Jordan’s team, sealed with a 1–2 finish for Damon Hill and Ralf Schumacher.
But Spa has delivered more than just chaos. We look back at 1992, when a young Michael Schumacher claimed his very first Grand Prix victory – the beginning of a legendary career. We remember Bruce McLaren, born on this day in 1937, whose name still graces one of F1’s greatest teams. And we revisit 2009, when Giancarlo Fisichella stunned the paddock by putting Force India on pole and chasing Kimi Räikkönen all the way to the flag.
From breakthroughs to blow-ups, August 30 has brought some of Formula One’s most unforgettable stories.
