27th August 2000: The Move That Made Häkkinen a Legend
Manage episode 502762507 series 3670475
On this day in 2000, Mika Häkkinen produced one of Formula One’s greatest ever overtakes at Spa-Francorchamps, sweeping past Michael Schumacher and Ricardo Zonta in a breathtaking three-wide move that sealed victory in the Belgian Grand Prix.
In this episode of Chequered Past, we revisit that iconic race and its impact on the title fight, celebrate the birthday of Derek Warwick — a driver whose career embodied resilience and versatility — and look back at Mario Andretti’s final win at the 1978 Dutch Grand Prix, a race that also gave Team Lotus its last 1–2 finish. We also travel to Mosport in 1967 for the very first Canadian Grand Prix, where Jack Brabham triumphed and a new era of North American F1 tradition began.
From legendary passes to historic firsts, this episode brings together stories of grit, brilliance, and moments that changed racing forever.
