I suppose that for at least five and 20 years of his life, there was not an English speaking household in the world where his name was not as familiar as that of any personal acquaintance, and where an illusion to characters of his creating could fail to be understood.
And that creative person was none other than Charles Dickens. So I felt that a a brief look into Charles Dickens might be a good place to start in an examination of major 19th century writers.
