BT and Sal debated Pete Alonso breaking the Mets' all-time home run record, with BT arguing that the low number (253) is more an indictment of the franchise's long history of futility rather than a glorious accomplishment. Sal agreed that the number itself is low but countered that the importance of Alonso's record lies in the fact that he's a homegrown star creating a meaningful history for the team, something the Mets have largely lacked. They both agreed that the record, while a nice moment for Alonso and some fans, ultimately highlights the franchise's inability to retain star sluggers like Darryl Strawberry and Mike Piazza for their entire careers.
