1971 Unbothered By This

How bothered are you right now? How upset, torn up, worried and overwhelmed do life’s circumstances have you?
And why is it we feel almost obligated to appear miserable when we’re going through these hard things? Like it’s wrong to be okay when things aren’t okay. We can’t be happy when the reality isn’t all sunshine and rainbows, so we put on our hardships like the fit of the day and wear it around.
But let me tell you something, the Spirit of God living within you equips you to be UNBOTHERED. You don’t have to wake up feeling all sorts of ways. Your thoughts don’t have to be plagued with replays of that hurt and offense. You don’t have to be continually burdened by the things that have hurt you. Everything doesn’t have to bother you … you can be in the middle of the storm and be filled with peace, settled in complete assurance, and held steady by the hand that never changes. That’s unbothered.
Isaiah 41:10, “Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.”
It’s easy to read that and think, “Ahhh, that’s a nice verse in our Bible”. Or maybe you even repost that because someone might need to hear it. But what about YOU – are you receiving that as God intended? God is speaking to you. He knows exactly what you’re going through. He knows the hurt. He knows the threat. He knows your worried thoughts and your unsettled heart.
Now, he’s showing up personally for you this morning and says, “My girl, don’t be afraid of this, I am right here with you. Don’t be discouraged over this, I am your God.”
When he reminds you he is your God, he reminds you nothing else is more powerful than him. Nothing can stop him, nothing can block him, nothing can cancel him. He is your God, and he is God over everything concerning you. He is God over your problem. He is God over your family. Nothing is above him and nothing is out of his reach. He is God in this.
And the God who holds supreme power and authority in this has a promise for you. Here’s his promise: “I will strengthen you. I will help you. I will hold you up with my hand of victory.”
Do you believe that? Will you receive that? Isaiah 41:10 is for you. Will you let that get down into your troubled heart as the truth? Will you let that calm the raging thoughts in your mind that have done nothing but replay the hurt and stir the offense? Will you let those worried thoughts be calmed by the hush of God that says, “Peace, be still now.”
Unbothered. It’s a chosen state of peace, even when there’s plenty of things to be bothered over.
Unbothered. It’s precisely what Jesus felt in the storm on a boat. Do you remember the story?
Mark 4: 35-40:
“As evening came, Jesus said to his disciples, ‘Let’s cross to the other side of the lake.’ So they took Jesus in the boat and started out, leaving the crowds behind. But soon a fierce storm came up. High waves were breaking into the boat, and it began to fill with water.”
Okay, stop right there. Have you ever been on a boat where the waves are bigger than the boat? Have you ever been that tossed by the storm? Have you ever watched a boat be filled with water? Imagine that terror for a moment. Now, imagine it’s at night and you don’t have flashlights. The oil lamps aren’t helping you here. You have no 300 horse power Suzuki to get you out of this. You’re in this storm at the worst possible time. Wouldn’t you be afraid? Wouldn’t you be bothered?
Verse 38, “Jesus was sleeping at the back of the boat with his head on a cushion.” Y’all, this is Jesus completely unbothered. He’s sleeping on a boat, taking on water in a storm in the night, and he’s unbothered. He’s resting. His mind isn’t racing with worst case scenarios. His heart isn’t troubled and upset. The threat seems real, but he’s at peace.
Could that ever be us? Could we be riding out a real threat and still be at peace? Could we be tossed in the storm, but be unbothered within?
“The disciples woke him up shouting, ‘Teacher, don’t you care that we’re going to drown?’ When Jesus woke up, he rebuked the wind and said to the waves, ‘Peace! Be still!” Suddenly the wind stopped, and there was a great calm. Then he asked them, ‘Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith?'”
Why are YOU afraid? Why are YOU so bothered? Why have you let THIS cause such fear within you? Where is your faith in THIS?
Seriously, Jesus is asking why you’re so upset by this storm. Storms happen. Problems come. Relationships struggle. Bodies grow frail. Plans fall apart. But God is here! God is holding you in his hand and the ultimate victory has been promised. Don’t let this storm get in you. Don’t let yourself be so bothered.
I’ve discovered on my rollercoaster ride of high highs and some ugly lows, that I always have a choice. I have a choice to freak out. I have a choice to hate the ride and be miserable. I have a choice to complain and question. I have a choice to be 100% bothered by everything I hate about this. But if that is my choice, then I forfeit the peace Jesus has offered me. I forfeit being a vessel of his power and love in this storm. And I really don’t want that.
I’m figuring out if God has allowed the storm, then he wants to show me his power in the storm. He’s teaching me to stay close, and when I do, I find the strength to hurt while being unbothered. When you’re focused on the bigger thing God wants to do, you can ride out the storms unbothered by the waves along the way.
Jesus was unbothered by a storm because he was bothered by something much greater. He knew he was ultimately on his way to offer his life to save us. And that’s the secret – when you’re focused on bigger things, the little things can’t upset you so terribly.
What bigger thing can you focus on that will allow you to handle these little things with peace?
Paul gives us this example. In Philippians 4: 11-12, “I have learned how to be content with whatever I have. I know how to live on almost nothing. I have learned the secret of living in every situation, whether it is with a full stomach or empty, with plenty or little.” Paul knows suffering. He knows problems. He knows threats. And he’s unbothered by all of that. But in Romans 9, we read what he’s really bothered by. Verse 2, “My heart is filled with bitter sorrow and unending grief for my people. I would be willing to be forever cursed – cut off from Christ – if that would save them.”
Paul has a greater focus that his comfort – he’s burdened for the souls of his people. You see, when you have something bigger than your problems to focus on, your problems become minor details. However, when you’re hyper focused on your problems, your problems will overwhelm you and you’ll miss the bigger purposes God has for you.
I believe it’s why we as a people have become so easily offended today – why we fight and bicker over everything – why we’re divided and bothered by everything – we’ve forgotten their souls. Paul wasn’t concerned with his comfort, he was absolutely crushed that people’s souls were unsaved. Jesus wasn’t bothered by the storm, he was focused on his mission to save our souls.
God has invited us into a faith journey with him that teaches us to be unbothered by much, and truly burdened by one thing – the souls of his people. The enemy has been on a mission to bother us by every little thing so we live our lives so overwhelmed and distracted that we overlook hurting and lost souls all around us.
Not today Satan. You won’t distract me with the offer of living bothered. I won’t let that become my focus and miss the souls here.
You and I can show up with real hurts, real problems, real threats and real storms – and we can be unbothered knowing Jesus is in the boat with us. God has given us the strength to be unbothered by the waves and focus on him and his purposes. What bigger thing can you focus on that will allow you to handle these little things with peace?
Isaiah 41:10, “Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.” Now, live today unbothered by the storm and only burdened for souls.
