Biblical talks Encouraging Word for the Week I am Rachel Tolliver, Ecclesiastes 1:2-3 Vanity of vanities, says the Preacher, vanity of vanities! All is vanity. What does man gain by all the toil at which he toils under the sun? Everything is empty and meaningless – from a merely human perspective. Here in Ecclesiastes, we find Solomon, away from God, launching out with his experiments “under the sun.” The man under the sun is a great deal different from the child of God who has been blessed “… with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ” (Eph_1:3). Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity [Ecc_1:2]. “Vanity” here speaks of emptiness. It is to waste life without any purpose or any goal. It means to live like an animal or a bird lives. There are a great many people who live like that. The Book of Ecclesiastes will reveal this. “Vanity of vanities; all is vanity” is life without God. It is a man walking and talking “under the sun,” trying to get something out of life, without God. God has a purpose and plan for your life, not meaningless.
