Today on Better Student Leaders, I’m joined by Doug Taylor, CEO of The Smith Family - one of Australia’s most trusted charities, supporting over 200,000 young people and families each year to overcome educational disadvantage.

In this conversation, Doug opens up about his why, the leadership lessons that have shaped him, and why being a “reformer” — someone who is persistently consistent — might just be the key to creating change that lasts.

Impactful Lessons and Quotes

    1. “Leadership is walking through doors and leaving them open for others.”
    2. “(In social change) You need activists and reformers... you need the people who aren't patient. (For reformers) given the organization I'm in, given our networks, our assets, our influence, the opportunity here, this is probably what we can achieve. So let's focus on that!"
    3. “Until we get a universal digital guarantee that focuses on access and building skills, AI will just accelerate the gap in learning for young people who can (vs who can't) use AI in their education."
    4. “We overestimate others’ capability and underestimate our own. No one has it all figured out, we’re all just doing the best we can.”
