Journey with me through the shadowy world of China's elite entertainment industry as I pull back the curtain on experiences few are willing to discuss. Drawing from my year managing a KTV club and witnessing the evolution of "duck culture," I reveal how this underground economy operates and has transformed over time.
My story begins at my sister's gathering where I encounter modern "ducks"—young men hired for female companionship—including a confrontation with a particularly rude one who mistook me for competition. This incident illuminates how dramatically the industry has changed. What once required education, linguistic skills, and artistic talents now simply demands good looks and submissiveness. The power dynamics have shifted alongside Chinese society itself, creating a marketplace where affluent women in their 50s, often with grown children and absent husbands, spend their wealth on male attention.
I also take you back to the late 1990s when I first witnessed what locals called "meat markets"—street blocks lined with hundreds of women available for hire for dining, entertainment, or more intimate services. Through conversations with those involved, including one woman who poignantly shared, "I never thought years later I'd be standing on the same corner" after seeing such women as a child, we gain profound insight into the human stories behind this industry.
These experiences under my mentor (whom I describe as a Chinese "Iceberg Slim") taught me invaluable lessons about human nature and societal boundaries. While most establishments mentioned have since closed as China has developed, the memories and insights remain. Would you have taken such a job if offered? Before answering, consider both the financial opportunity and the physical and emotional toll this lifestyle demands.
