The Difference Between Honoring and Obeying
“Son, always do what’s right. Even if I tell you to do something wrong, do what’s right.” - my dad, The Rev. Horace G. McMillon, jr.
My father’s instruction to me gave me a very different insight on a verse that is sometimes used for mischief: “Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. ‘Honor your father and mother’” (from Ephesians 6)
We are not called to blind obedience. Our fathers and mothers are not called to be despots drunk on power doing as they see fit for whatever reasons they want.
We are called to honor our parents at all times, but we only obey them in The Lord. We follow their instructions that are centered in love, teaching and direction that honors God, ourselves, and our neighbors as ourselves. We decline all else.
We honor them by loving them, forgiving them when necessary. We honor them by focusing anything in them that was good, or noble, or praiseworthy. We honor them by learning from their examples good or bad, and becoming the best versions of ourselves.
I’m Horace McMillon. This is 60 Seconds of Hope. Peace be with you.
