We will explore the origins of the Wendigo, a creature most commonly referred to as bone-white, grotesque, and whose presence is more than corporeal. It is an ominous representation of the darker desires of humanity. We analyze its folk tales, like the frightening tale of Swift Runner, who professed to have been haunted by this malevolent entity, eventually leading to the demise of his kin. We analyze, too, the cultural status of the Wendigo, like its being an allegory on overindulgence and corruption. As we break down this complex character, we ask our audience to embrace the horrible reality that the Wendigo represents our own individual demons which we all harbor above and beyond it being a myth.
