Before she understood ghosts, she understood fear. At five, her new bedroom was in the basement—a cold, waiting space that seemed to breathe when she didn’t. The first night she saw them, two white-blue orbs darted across her open doorway, bright as electricity, silent as thought. They came again and again, hovering like curious fish in air too still for comfort. Her mother said it was imagination. But the girl knew better.
Upstairs was safety. Downstairs was presence. The air pressed close, humming with attention that felt almost intelligent. Outside, the unease followed her to the backyard, to the willow that never moved quite right, and the moss-covered fountain that seemed to remember water. A pale mist drifted where no fog should form—watching, always stopping just short of her reach.
She can still picture the blue light flickering through the dark—less like threat, more like recognition. Because some hauntings don’t want revenge; they want remembrance. And sometimes, when a child notices what adults can’t, that’s enough to set the dead free.
