Prop 50 Special Election Coverage

Today is the last day to vote on California’s special election Proposition 50. The measure would temporarily redraw the state’s congressional maps to favor Democrats in five key districts, bypassing California’s independent redistricting committee. The measure is a reaction to state lawmakers in Texas gerrymandering their own congressional district lines to give Republicans more power in Congress. Once residents cast their ballots, what happens next? CapRadio Local Government Reporter Riley Palmer shares her reporting on what you can expect after the polls close in California’s 2025 special election.

Editor's note: During this segment it was misstated that election volunteers check and process ballots. They are in fact checked and processed by trained election staff.

Kim Alexander is president of the California Voter Foundation (CVF), a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization she re-founded in 1994 to advance the responsible use of technology in the democratic process and improve the voting process to better serve the needs and interests of voters. She joins us with their voter guide.

Alexei Koseff is a staff writer for the San Francisco Chronicle based in Washington D.C. and joins us about how California’s redistricting special election is playing out on the national stage.
