Hugo shares how surfing began in Portugal only a few decades ago, facing early resistance before becoming a respected sport. He explains the natural forces that create Nazaré’s enormous swells through a deep underwater canyon and recounts how he and his teammates explored the area starting in 2007.

The conversation centers on the legendary wave called Big Mama. Hugo details the forecast, the teamwork, and the breathtaking moment he faced the massive wave head-on, describing the scene as “giant, enormous, dark.” He also reflects on the challenges that followed—worldwide attention, mixed opinions, and a near-fatal accident that taught him to value life and friendship more deeply.
