The objective of the show is to deliver straight talk, share institutional knowledge and provide data-driven analysis on the macro and micro economic forces shaping the tricounty South Florida region of Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach.
In the Oct. 8, 2025, episode of The Peter Zalewski Show podcast, host Peter Zalewski interviews Jean Gruss, a former journalist who now provides business writing services with his company Gruss Communications while remotely based in Key West.
The discussion focuses on the critical lessons learned in his 14 months living in Key West about succeeding in a radically different South Florida market and lifestyle.
Relocating from Miami to Key West was a calculated step driven primarily by Gruss’s desire to maintain his clients - a move they supported - while simultaneously increasing time for diving, an activity he routinely engages in through weekly local dives in the Florida Keys archipelago and global travel to internationally known dive destinations.
One of the immediate challenges anyone relocating to Key West will realize is that it takes about three hours to drive to the mainland.
Flights are quicker but cost more and require advance planning.
This logistical reality of moving to the Southernmost Point of the United States means living on an island presents unique hurdles.
The necessity of navigating limited housing options and paying a premium for groceries and supplies that have to be trucked down from Miami reinforces the importance of planning ahead and maintaining flexibility when circumstances shift unexpectedly.
Furthermore, the necessity of adapting to Key West living often meant downsizing space, requiring the elimination of excess possessions for a smoother transition.
Life in Key West operates on “island time,” a stark contrast to Miami’s hustle.
Adapting to this slower rhythm demanded patience and a shift in mindset after living in Miami for six years, ultimately leading to a more relaxed and mindful approach to daily life and work management.
Despite Duval Street’s reputation as a party place, Gruss said many locals seldom visit the touristy area as they are busy working, spending time on the water and socializing with friends and family.
Leaving behind established friends and familiar professional networks in Miami could have posed a challenge for Gruss, but Key West is a community that welcomes newcomers.
After relocating to Key West, Gruss discovered the extent to which the island is a hub for marine science much like what Silicon Valley is to technology and Miami is to condo development.
Gruss’ acclimation to Key West has been accelerated by his active involvement as a volunteer with the local marine organizations.
Ultimately, the move to Key West has served as a lesson in adventure, resilience and adaptability for Gruss.
