Today's reading will cover Jeremiah Chapters 38, 39:1-18, 40:1-6, 52:6-27, 2 Kings Chapter 25:3-23, and 2 Chronicles 36:17-20. Today we will read about Jeremiah being thrown into a well by leaders because he is delivering God's message for Judah that is advising the people to surrender to Babylon. We will see king Zedekiah not standing up as king and allowing his leaders to do what they want, then asking Jeremiah in secret to tell him what God says. We will also see a courageous leader from Cush (Ethiopia) who spoke up for Jeremiah and rescued him from the well. In today's reading God's prophesies concerning Babylon capturing the rest of Judah, burning it, and capturing king Zedekiah will be fulfilled. In our discussion for daily application we will talk about God's provision for Jeremiah throughout his calling to proclaim God's words as well as God's provision for the Cushite man who courageously spoke up on Jeremiah's behalf when he was thrown into the well. We will be encouraged to be who God created us to be and do the good works God has prepared in advance for us to do. It can't possibly be as hard for us as it was for Jeremiah to keep doing what God wanted him to do- Jeremiah was repeatedly jailed, beaten, and suffered for obeying God, yet through it all God provided for him and eventually Jeremiah was able to return to Judah and live in peace, after God's judgment was rendered on Judah. Let us not be like king Zedekiah who was constantly too scared to do anything he was supposed to be doing- shepherding God's people, obeying God by surrendering, speaking up for Jeremiah. Instead, be encouraged by seeing that God will take care of us the way He took care of Jeremiah and the Cushite leader who stepped up to speak on Jeremiah's behalf and rescued him from the well. God protected him at the final fall of Babylon as a result of his faith in God, the same way He protected Jeremiah, and God can protect us, too, as we obey God and have faith in Him to do what He calls us to do.
