This original research article investigates the relationship between sleep duration and hydration levels in adults, using cross-cultural data from the United States and China. Analyzing large sample sizes from established surveys, the study measured hydration using urinary biomarkers. The findings indicate that short sleep duration is associated with a higher likelihood of inadequate hydration, as evidenced by more concentrated urine, particularly when compared to individuals reporting eight hours of sleep. While the association in the US showed a slight U-shape with longer sleep also potentially impacting hydration, the Chinese data presented a more direct link between shorter sleep and worse hydration. Overall, the study suggests a significant connection between how long people sleep and how well-hydrated they are.
