The "Mandela Effect" gets its name from people's shared, but incorrect, memories of Nelson Mandela dying in prison in the 1980s, a time when he was actually still alive
· Fiona Broome's Discovery:
In 2009, paranormal researcher Fiona Broome created a website after realizing that many people, including herself, held the false belief that Nelson Mandela had died in prison during the 1980s.
· The Misremembered Event:
The actual Nelson Mandela died in 2013, not in the 1980s as many people mistakenly recalled.
· The Name:
Broome coined the term "Mandela Effect" to describe this phenomenon of collective false memory, and the term stuck.
· Broader Meaning:
The Mandela Effect now refers to any instance where a large group of people share a false memory of a historical event or detail, even when the facts are known to be different.
