Welcome to The Daily Quote—a podcast designed to kickstart your day in a positive way. I'm your host, Andrew McGivern, for April 7th.
Now, let’s talk about today’s national holiday. It’s National Beer Day! The day we honor one of humanity’s greatest inventions—right up there with the wheel, electricity, and the mute button on conference calls.
April 7th marks the anniversary of the Cullen-Harrison Act in 1933, which allowed Americans to legally buy beer again after Prohibition. And people celebrated immediately. Some bars started serving at 12:01 a.m.—because patience is not a virtue when you’ve been waiting 13 years for a drink.
Maybe that explains why Canadians seem to be calmer and more chill...
To mark the occasion, today’s quote comes from American author Dave Barry, who once said:
“Without question, the greatest invention in the history of mankind is beer. Oh, I grant you the wheel was also a fine invention, but the wheel does not go nearly as well with pizza.”
And you know what? He’s got a point. You never hear anyone say, “Man, you know what would really complete this pepperoni pizza? A set of Michelin tires.”
Beer isn’t just a drink—it’s an experience. It brings people together, sparks conversations, and makes watching a three-hour sports game feel like twenty minutes. It’s a social glue that has been holding civilization together for centuries. Think about it—some of the earliest human writings were about beer. The ancient Sumerians even had a goddess of brewing. If that doesn’t prove its importance to history, I don’t know what does.
Now, of course, like all good things in life, moderation is key. A cold beer at the end of the day? Fantastic. Three too many, followed by some regrettable karaoke choices? Less fantastic.
So, whether you celebrate today by enjoying a brew, sharing a toast with friends, or simply appreciating the fine art of fermentation, take a moment to enjoy the little things. Life’s too short not to raise a glass every now and then.
And if you like the show, follow in your podcast app... Cheers!
