Apple Ditching OpenGL?

Wow, finally something interesting to say about Apple for a change! Apparently at Apple’s recent WWDC event they announced a “competitor” to DirectX called “Metal”

What’s wrong with the industry moving to Metal, if it’s so good? Has Apple promised never to open it to others? The last time Apple did something cool with GPUs was OpenCL, which they spun into an open standard, created a non-profit consortium to manage it, and got all the major hardware vendors to join. If Metal is anything like that, I truly hope (as a former OpenGL programmer) that OpenGL dies a quick death.
