Steven Spielberg was just 28 when Jaws hit theaters, forever changing his life and the movie industry. To mark the opening of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures Jaws exhibition, Spielberg sits down with Joe Fryer to reflect on the grueling 159-day shoot on Martha’s Vineyard, the origin of the mechanical shark’s “Bruce” nickname, and how he feared the film might end his career before it began. Spielberg also discusses the movie’s impact on shark conservation over the last 50 years and how a community of cast, crew, and locals helped create one of the most enduring films in history.
