When the founder is the face of the business, it can lower its sale price and make it hard to pass on value.

Caroline Troy walked into many companies where the founder was the star: everyone knew them, they did many things, and the business depended on them. One day she had a founder ask, “If I stepped away, would my business still be worth something?” That question led her to help businesses change so they are more than just one person. In this episode, we hear how being the face of your business can be a hidden risk. Caroline shows us what buyers really want. She teaches us how to make your business strong even when you are not always in front.

Key topics covered:

  • Why being “the face” can reduce your business value
  • What buyers look for when valuing a business (systems, cash flow, team, risks)
  • How to make value transferable—so business works without you
  • Understanding types of buyers (financial, strategic, etc.)
  • Time value of money: how timing changes value
  • Tips to improve business cash flow and avoid surprises at sale

Guest & Resources:
Caroline Troy, MBA, CBV – Troy Valuations

Upcoming webinar: Valuation Methods in Family Law: Strengths, Weaknesses, and Pitfalls (Legal Education Society of Alberta) — shows how business value is set in divorce, why dates matter, and what many people get wrong.
