Microsoft builds a Snapchat competitor called WindUp

It’s no secret that Snapchat, the app that lets you send time-limited messages, has run into a few issues this year: From exposing nearly five million accounts, to the FTC ruling that the company was deceiving users, the app may still be popular but many people no longer trust it.

Microsoft Research is the team that built the app and they hope to fill that trust gap by releasing an app called WindUp for Windows Phone 8/8.1. Just like Snapchat, WindUp allows users to send time-limited messages and media to their friends and family. The name apparently comes from wanting to “‘wind up’ your friends as they race to see what you’ve posted,” which may seem a little silly to some, but is a catchy name nonetheless.

since NSA - Microsoft contract are still valid, “fill that trust gap” is hard.
